We must realize that Ligeti was working in the Hungary, in (almost) total isolation from the rest of the continent, where Schoenberg, Berg, Webern, and later Boulez and Stockhausen were using serial techniques to find a way to detach modern music from the “tyranny” of the Western tonal system. Ligeti approached the same problem from an apparently antithetical standpoint (using one note instead of a fixed series of twelve pitches), yet focusing on the other parameters of music in order to create direction and growth.

Speaking of Timberlake, I didn’t watch the Super Bowl in 2004, but I remember kids at school telling me about it later. If you don’t know the story already, I’m here to fill you in.

In this edition of “Talking Points,” producer and beat maker Kaytranada talks about his grooves, his influences, and his upbringing, and we boil it down!

“Perhaps the more important feedback was something that he did himself. He paid close attention to which aspects of a string of digits caused him problems. If he’d gotten the string wrong, he usually knew exactly why and which digits he had messed up on. Even if he got the string correct, he could report to me afterward which digits had given him trouble and which had been no problem. By recognizing where his weaknesses were, he could switch his focus appropriately and come up with new memorization techniques that would address those weaknesses.”

You already know that Austin is a mecca of musical talent and endless opportunities during SXSW but it’s also a pretty incredible year-round music scene, and partly because of the large student presence. If you’re familiar with SXSW, you’re likely aware of the rows of live music venues on Sixth Street, with shows running throughout the week. In addition, it has the Pecan Street Festival, which features five stages for live music, as well as performances by the Austin Symphony Orchestra. With several college campuses throughout the city, you shouldn’t have any trouble finding a venue and an audience if you play your marketing cards right!

And while I’m on a food/beverage aside, La Cumbre Brewing Co. is a great local brewery that serves my favorite beer (Slice of Hefen; which actually is a slice of heaven) and just has a nice vibe about it. You’re guaranteed to make a friend here. It’s not too loud or stand-offish and they play excellent music.

Now, you’ll also need to work out a door split with the venue. I always ask for the door split to be increased as we well more tickets. If I do a great job planning a show that brings in a ton of people, I think it’s fair to say that I should be rewarded by getting a better door split. The more people I bring in, the more money the venue makes on alcohol sales.

If you’re a Splice user, you can choose an 808 sample from their library, or just generate your own and drag it into a sampler (not a drum rack!) of your choosing. Most samplers will automatically start resampling the sound so that its pitch is adjusted as you play it in.

Muru was initially created to solve a professional problem I had as a music curator. As a consultant, I was creating these incredibly long playlists for small venues like bars, restaurants, hair salons, etc. The very initial idea for Muru was to build a search tool that would help me find more songs with the same “vibe” as the ones I had already found. If a Jackson 5 song worked really well in a previous playlist, I wanted to find songs with a similar vibe for the next playlist.

Due to the way that YouTube’s algorithms have recently started moving users around based on several years worth of tracking their preferences, recommending content that is not always the obvious next step (because if you simply want the next track on an artist’s album, you’re probably already on Spotify), and then leveraging “discovery results” that are considered successful, thousands upon thousands of listeners streaming long-playing ambient music and sounds have been led directly to user Jackamo Brown‘s upload of Through the Looking Glass. The record had found its audience.

Andrea: Maria was an excellent student and she worked so hard during the course. She asked tons of great questions on our calls and was a pleasure to work with. Probably one of the best sessions for me so far!

“Get your Boss on with this original collection of line drawings depicting the many faces of Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Bruce Springsteen, the artist behind best-selling albums like Born to Run, The River, Born in the USA, and Chapter and Verse. A unique and fun gift for fans of all ages.”

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s ballet, “Swan Lake, Opus 20” contains a very distinct melody that you might not think you’d recognize until you hear it. At 0:03 of Act II, the oboe solo clearly establishes the perfect fifth in a beautiful descending line.
